Laminate Questions
What is laminate flooring?
Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic floor designed to mimic the look of hardwood, tile, or stone. It features a high-resolution printed image layer beneath a tough, transparent wear layer and a dense core for stability. It’s not vinyl or sheet flooring—laminate is its own category and offers a great balance of durability, style, and affordability.
Is laminate the same as sheet vinyl?
No—laminate and sheet vinyl are completely different. Sheet vinyl is a flexible, continuous roll of flooring, while laminate is a rigid plank product made to look like wood or tile. Laminate is thicker, more realistic in appearance, and usually installed as a floating floor with click-lock edges.
How durable is laminate flooring?
Laminate is highly durable and a great option for busy households. It resists scratches, dents, and fading, especially when you choose a product with a thick wear layer (measured in AC rating). It’s ideal for living rooms, hallways, bedrooms, and other high-traffic areas.
Is laminate flooring waterproof?
Most laminate flooring is water-resistant, not waterproof. That means it can handle everyday spills if cleaned up promptly, but it’s not ideal for areas with standing water or excessive moisture—like bathrooms or basements—unless you choose a waterproof-rated laminate.
How does laminate flooring compare to LVP?
Both offer great looks and affordability, but there are differences:
-
Laminate usually has a more realistic wood texture and a harder feel underfoot.
-
LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) is fully waterproof, while most laminates are only water-resistant.
Our team can help you compare options based on your needs.
Can laminate flooring be installed over my existing floor?
In many cases, yes! Laminate can be floated over existing hard floors like vinyl, tile, or wood—as long as the subfloor is flat, clean, and stable. We’ll check your current flooring during your estimate to be sure.
What kind of maintenance does laminate flooring require?
Laminate is very low-maintenance. Just sweep or vacuum regularly and use a damp (not wet) mop with a laminate-safe cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, steam mops, or letting water sit on the surface.
Is laminate flooring a good choice for homes with pets?
Yes—laminate is a scratch-resistant option that holds up well to pet nails and general wear. Just be sure to clean up spills or accidents quickly to protect the seams from moisture damage.
Will laminate flooring increase my home’s value?
While it might not have the same resale appeal as solid hardwood, quality laminate can still add visual appeal and perceived value, especially when installed well and paired with the right decor.
How long does laminate flooring last?
With proper care, laminate flooring can last 10–20 years or more, depending on the product quality and the environment it’s installed in. We offer laminates with great warranties and durability for long-term use.
