It took quite a bit of work to install the new carpet and Cali Floors Aged Hickory flooring in this remodeled Fargo, ND home to our client’s expecations, but we managed to knock it out of the park!
Prepping the Floors
So. Much. Floor. Prep
Fargo has grown rapidly and one thing we’ve run into a lot is shoddy flooring work in newly built homes or DIY disasters born out of the house flipping craze. This house had a DIY porcelain tile plank installed directly over plywood.
The new homeowner didn’t want to keep the failed tile installation and requested we install Cali Floors Aged Hickory flooring. Before we could do that, we had to demo the tile and prep the floors.
Floor Prep Steps:
✅ We had to demo the gray wood look tile planks in the first photo. That was relatively easy.
✅ We had to remove the remaining thinset in the second photo, that required a grinder, a HEPA vacuum, and a dust separator to protect us from silica in the thinset.
✅ Filling in of low spots with patching cement and fixing holes in the subfloor. (The second photo shows two new pieces of plywood that the tile installers left under the tile. No wonder it failed!)
The prep was time consuming (and dusty!) but as you’ll see, this lead to amazing results and very happy customers.

The Finished LVP Install
Once all the floor prep was done, we could proceed with the luxury vinyl plank installation in this Fargo, ND home.
What made this vinyl plank install stand apart? :
✅ We took more time to prep the floors than we did installing them. A lot of flooring stores don’t stress checking the subfloor as an installation requirement before installing the floor itself.
✅ This version of Cali Floors Aged Hickory is less expensive and thinner than the Classic or Windansea versions. Any imperfections in the subfloor could potentially cause gapping or buckling. We offered the new homeowners a lifetime of the floor warranty.
✅ The stairs got vinyl plank on the riser and carpet on the step. This was the first time we made the use of rubber pad standard instead of an extra expense.
Installing this luxury vinyl plank turned out great, the customers gave us an amazing review, and we feel comfortable warrantying this job for as long as these Fargo homeowners live in their home. Out of all the companies they could have called in Fargo-Moorhead, they chose us and we’re thankful.
