Finding the Right Colors to Fit with the School Spirit
Valley City State University Cafeteria Update
Creating a welcoming community space where students can feel at home while away from family is a top priority for higher education campuses. When Valley City State University (VCSU) decided to update its dining facility, they saw the perfect opportunity to revamp the area with high-durability materials while infusing true Viking school spirit into the design.
Starting with the Vision
When most people think of a traditional campus cafeteria, they picture dated flooring and utility-focused layouts. Prior to this project, VCSU’s dining area featured standard carpet tiles in the primary seating zones, paired with original hardwood flooring near the main serving lines.
Because the cafeteria is a massive, high-traffic hub welcoming many students, staff, and faculty daily, the goal was clear: modernize the floor plan, streamline room maintenance, and reflect campus pride directly through the floor layout.
When choosing commercial flooring capable of handling heavy daily foot traffic, spills, and rolling loads, selecting the material surface is critical.
Product Selection & Floor Plan Design
To achieve the modern look and heavy-duty durability needed for a university environment, our team selected premium commercial luxury vinyl tile (LVT) products from Mohawk:
- Base Flooring: Mohawk Stones Collection in Vesivius, featuring a terrazzo pattern with flecks of red, gray, and blacks.
- Accent & Border Inlays: Mohawk Timber Series in Smoked Timber and Red Flare. This integrates the the custom wood-look accents in the school’s colors.
Using a custom perimeter outline of Red Flare, we designed a seamless, flush transition from the stone-look terrazzo surfaces to the wood-plank accent areas.
Precise Installation & Custom Inlay Work
While preparing the subfloor and laying the main Vesiuvius terrazzo moved quickly, the core craftsmanship of this project lay in the custom inlay detailing. Precision cutting and aligning the Smoked Timber planks and Red Flare accent borders required careful layout planning to ensure clean lines and smooth traffic transitions throughout the dining hall.
The resulting custom finish transformed the room into an inviting, high energy campus hub that VCSU students can enjoy for years to come.
